Weekend Art Challenge Results – Superfinds!

What makes something a “super find”? It could be a lucky treasure spotted at a car boot sale, a well-loved object from a charity shop, a curious item found on a beach walk, or even a cherished everyday item that simply sparks joy. For this weekend’s challenge, we asked our students to create a drawing or painting of something they had discovered and found interesting or delightful. Their very own “super find.”

And what a variety we received! From quirky figurines and collected feathers to colourful shells and even an electric pencil sharpener (yes — and beautifully drawn at that!), each piece tells a story. The artwork is not only technically strong but full of love and personality.

Scroll down to see how our students interpreted this challenge. We hope it inspires you to take a second look at the small but meaningful objects around you and perhaps even sketch them! Stay tuned for the next challenge tomorrow!

This is a pottery chicken that I recently found in a local charity shop, to add to my ever growing chicken collection – I couldn’t leave it behind! It’s made using pen and ink and watercolour.

A lovely super find from my grandmother’s home. She would serve Turkish delight with coffee on these little plates ❤️🌸

Irises in a vase I bought from a charity shop approximately 9 years ago, very beautiful vase. Still life: sketched with pencil, then watercolour and liner pen on hot pressed watercolour paper A3 size.

This is my super find for the weekend challenge. It is special to me as for the last three years I have found and painter a ‘conker’ and love to compare them to see how I am improving. This year, as a nod to my Botanical Art course, I have drawn thus in my nature journal using the skills I have learnt over the past year.

For the Super Finds Challenge, I recreated a watercolor painting signed ‘Cem86’, which I discovered among the belongings of one of my elder relatives, adding my own interpretation

I am Aubrey and am a new student on the Cartooning Diploma.
I have attached my first Weekend Art Challenge Submission for the school’s blog next week. I am a collector of Beano and Dandy memorabilia and found an amazing box of vintage badges and the original comic issues they were issued with at a local boot sale with my family. I then wore the Minnie the Minx one when I attended a cartooning workshop with the Beano artist Laura Howell shortly afterwards. Perfect find, and only 50p!!

This piece of Shrek and Donkey is a water bottle, I got it from Universal Studios in Singapore. It was free when I paid entry fee. So, a straw is at Shrek’s head. Also head and upper chest are a screw lid of the bottle. It is not very user friendly as a water bottle, but I like it. I kept this since 2009.
Created with acrylic.

A broken old telephone with coloured pencils in sketchbook, A5 size
This thing is my house where I live currently. I didn’t know what it was initially. Have fun!
