Weekend Art Challenge – Three Colours!

This weekend we would love you to try something a little different – a Three Colour Challenge!

The idea is simple: create a piece of artwork using just three colours – pink, blue and yellow. You can choose any medium you enjoy, whether that is pencils, watercolour, acrylics, pastels, digital, or a mix. The fun of this challenge is discovering how much you can achieve with a limited palette.

Think about how you can blend and layer your three colours to make new shades and tones. For example, pink and blue can create purples, while yellow and blue make fresh greens. You might be surprised at just how many variations you can mix from only three colours.

This is a wonderful way to practise colour mixing, explore harmony, and discover new combinations you might not usually try. It is also a great exercise for training your eye to focus on values, contrasts, and composition.

We cannot wait to see your creative results – whether you paint a still life, a landscape, a portrait, or an abstract piece, let’s see what you can do with only pink, blue and yellow!

Tutor’s Tip: Before you begin, test out your three chosen colours on some scrap paper and experiment with mixing them in different ratios. You may find soft pastels, rich oranges, or even muted neutrals appearing – all from just three simple shades. Good luck and have fun!

The idea of these challenges is to help students improve their skills by drawing, painting and creating regularly.

So try to submit work that you have created specifically for the challenge – or course work you are currently creating for your art course. Sometimes our challenge themes cross over with what students are learning. Our challenges are great practive for your coursework too!
