This weekend’s art challenge was all about celebrating the season through one of its most iconic features – summer flowers. Whether picked from the garden, spotted on a walk, or remembered from a favourite summer holiday, we asked students to paint or draw their chosen blooms in full colour.
We received a wonderful selection of artwork this week, from lovely almost botanical studies to more expressive and painterly styles. It is always lovely to see how each student interprets the brief in their own way. Some chose to work from life, others from their own photos and the variety of techniques and varying materials really stood out this week.
Thank you to everyone who took part – every entry brought a bit of summer sunshine to our inbox! Well done to all!

Common Mallow with watercolour pencils and liner pens. Stonehenge HP watercolour paper.
This had to be quick. I have been on holiday and had just got back. This was growing in my garden when I got home. I quickly sketched it out and outlined it for speed. I selected just a few colours in watercolour pencil. I scribbled the pencils on my little caran d’ache palette and activated them with water before quickly dropping onto the paper.
I kept my sketch and photographed my plant composition for future use. When I have more time, I’d like to redo it in more detail.
