We are delighted to share the wonderful work of student Ganna Jones, who has successfully completed our portrait painting course. Ganna has worked through a wide range of subjects and techniques, producing a thoughtful and expressive collection of final pieces.
Throughout the course, Ganna explored both watercolour and oil painting, clearly enjoying the unique qualities of each. Her confidence with watercolour is particularly evident, using soft washes and subtle layering to create atmosphere and light. At the same time, her oil painting demonstrates a good understanding of form and tone, with a smooth and controlled finish.
One of Ganna’s favourite aspects of working in watercolour is the ability to create interesting, fluid effects, and this comes through beautifully in her paintings. In contrast, she enjoys the richness and handling of oils, appreciating their depth and texture.
Her self portrait was a challenging piece, as is often the case. Capturing a likeness from a photograph of oneself is never straightforward, yet Ganna approached this with care and sensitivity, producing a thoughtful and well-observed study.
The full figure beach painting, featuring her friend in Conwy, is full of personality. The relaxed pose and bright coastal setting give the piece a lovely sense of warmth and character. It is clear that Ganna has enjoyed telling a story through her work, rather than simply copying a reference.
The child portrait is another standout piece, showing gentle handling of colour and a good sense of structure. The expression is natural and understated, which is often the hardest thing to achieve.
Overall, this final submission reflects Ganna’s dedication and steady progress throughout the course. She has developed a strong foundation in portrait painting and a clear appreciation for both watercolour and oil techniques.
We would like to thank Ganna for her kind words and for being such a committed student. It has been a pleasure to support her along the way, and we look forward to seeing where her artwork takes her next.
