Monday Art Musings – Letting Go of Perfection and Enjoying the Process

Perfection is one of the biggest obstacles artists face. The desire to make everything look right can quickly turn drawing and painting into a tense, joyless experience.

When perfection takes over, people often hesitate to start, overwork their pieces, or abandon work that does not meet their expectations.

Letting go of perfection does not mean lowering standards. It means allowing yourself to learn through doing rather than judging every mark as it appears.

Artwork is a process. It develops through trial, adjustment and sometimes failure. When you focus too much on the end result, you miss the value of what happens along the way.

Enjoying the process means paying attention to how it feels to work, not just what the finished piece looks like. It means noticing moments of discovery, problem-solving and improvement.

The more permission you give yourself to experiment and make imperfect work, the easier it becomes to keep going.

Art does not need to be flawless to be meaningful. Often, the most engaging pieces are the ones that feel honest and alive rather than polished and controlled.
