Helen Chorley

I completed the London Art College Pet Portrait diploma in January 2022.  My tutor Gayle Mason was great and I learnt so much from this course and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Since completing this over 4 years ago, I have drawn mainly dog portraits from reference photos, using pastel pencils.

After drawing fur and wet noses for so long, I  wanted a change and to broaden my horizons and try some plein air drawing, but most of all I want to improve my free hand drawing skills. What a better way to start than by signing up for the Beginners Drawing Course to start with the basics.   Monika my tutor is great, I have learnt so much already and I am really enjoying it. She gives constructive feedback and is so encouraging.  I am also enjoying working with pen and ink which is a new medium to me.

The first drawing is of a statue – a bronze hollow head by Igor Mitoraj in the main square in the centre of Krakow (I took a photo while visiting earlier this year).  ‘The piece of art represents a mythological figure bound in bandages, symbolizing love’s entrapment and as a fallen god on the pavement, a reflection on modern humanity’.  I drew this free hand in pencil first and then pen and ink, using a paintbrush to cover the large areas in ink.  The second drawing is another one of my other free hand drawings from still life in graphite pencil from one of the first assignments.
