Adam Perryman – Pastels Certificate Course

Adam has recently started the Pastels Certificate Course and these studies come from his very first set of work. What stands out immediately is his handling of form and light. Garlic is deceptively tricky – smooth but ridged, pale but not flat, simple but full of subtle tonal shifts. Adam has captured the rounded structure beautifully, especially in the monochrome study, where the focus is entirely on tone rather than colour. That is not an easy thing to do, and it shows a solid understanding of how light wraps around an object.

The colour version brings in gentle warmth without overworking the surface, a very common pitfall with pastels. These are thoughtful drawings, and that is exactly what we want to see at this point in the course. Most importantly, Adam is working carefully and looking properly. We are very much looking forward to seeing how his work develops as he moves through the course.

About the Pastels Certificate Course

The London Art College Pastels Certificate Course is designed to guide students step by step through the fundamentals of pastel drawing and painting. Starting with controlled tonal studies like these, the course gradually builds confidence in:

  • Observational drawing
  • Light and shadow
  • Colour layering and blending
  • Surface handling and texture
  • Composition and subject choice

Students work at their own pace, receiving structured guidance and tutor feedback as they progress. It is suitable for beginners as well as those returning to pastels after time away, and it focuses on building strong foundations rather than rushing ahead.

Adam is only at the beginning of his journey and if this is where he is starting, we can safely say he is on very solid ground. We cannot wait to see what comes next.
