Having completed the Diploma in Drawing and Painting with the London Art College I wanted to do something very different and was immediately attracted to the Chinese Brush Painting Certificate course which introduces students to this traditional ancient art form. Once I had the specialist brushes, ink and papers I began to appreciate the mindfulness of the process, from grinding ink to the control of the brush and strokes.
The first two assignments of the course covered the ‘Four Gentlemen’ : bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum and plum blossom which are traditional subjects and also involve mastering most of the techniques and brushstrokes. I particularly enjoyed painting the bamboo in a variety of situations – wind, snow etc.
The final two assignments encouraged me to explore flowers, birds, fish, insects, rocks and landscapes as depicted in traditional Chinese art, and I enjoyed the challenge of portraying their essence rather than exacting realism or accuracy.
With the excellent support and encouragement of the London Art College tutor, Monika Cilmi I made significant improvements as I worked through each stage of the course. The flexible nature of the LAC course suited me well as I did not wish to rush and I enjoyed spending over two years to complete the Certificate. The expert guidance from Monika gave me a wonderful introduction to Chinese art and culture and I look forward to developing my skills in the years ahead.
