Celebrating the Watercolour Work of Philip Hatter

We are delighted to celebrate the work of Philip Hatter, who has been a wonderful and highly committed student with us. The watercolour paintings shown here include a selection of work produced during his studies on the Watercolour Diploma Course, alongside pieces created for our popular Weekend Art Challenges.

Across these paintings, Philip demonstrates a confident and sensitive approach to watercolour. His landscapes show a strong understanding of light, atmosphere and depth, with loose, expressive washes balanced by carefully placed structure. The woodland scenes in particular capture that fleeting quality watercolour does so well, shifting light, softened edges, and a real sense of space and movement. Throughout the work, there is a clear willingness to let the medium breathe, allowing water and pigment to do what they do best rather than overworking the surface.

It has been a pleasure to see Philip’s progress, not only through the structured course work but also through his enthusiastic participation in the Weekend Art Challenges.

Weekend Art Challenges – Starting Again Tomorrow

Our Weekend Art Challenges return tomorrow, giving students the chance to explore new subjects, loosen up their approach, and experiment outside the core course structure. These challenges are open to all students with all abilities and are designed to encourage creativity, regular practice and confidence without pressure.

About the Watercolour Diploma Course

Philip studied on our Watercolour Diploma Course, a comprehensive course designed to guide students through both traditional and contemporary watercolour techniques. The course covers landscape, still life, interior scenes, and expressive studies, with structured assignments and detailed tutor feedback throughout.

Students are encouraged to develop strong technical foundations while also finding confidence in their own style and approach to the medium.

Well done to Philip on all of the pieces he has produced with us, not just the ones here and we are certain he will go far with his watercolours in 2026!
