Joan Henderson

We are delighted to share some beautiful artwork from Joan Henderson, who is currently studying on the Coloured Pencil Diploma Course.

For her second set of assignments, Joan produced a variety of coloured pencil drawings, including a detailed study of a tree, a beached fishing boat, and a wonderfully observed still life arrangement of string, ribbon, safety pins, and a plug. The still life setup is particularly striking – full of fine detail and texture, with a lovely balance of colour and form.

In her course notes Joan reflected on how much she is enjoying the process of layering pencils to create both colour and texture. She especially mentioned how surprised she was to capture the look of string in her “junk collection” still life by layering and carefully erasing colour. Joan also shared that she finds drawing angles and achieving depth of colour a challenge, but she is making excellent progress and experimenting with different papers and pencil brands to refine her technique.

We think Joan’s work shows great patience, observation, and skill. Her still life piece really stands out, and we look forward to seeing how her drawings continue to develop throughout the course.

If you feel inspired by Joan’s work and would like to learn how to create your own detailed coloured pencil drawings, take a look at our Coloured Pencil Diploma Course. The course is designed to guide students through techniques such as layering, blending, and creating textures to bring drawings to life.

Keep up the great work, Joan!
