Weekend Art Challenge – Hands

This weekend we are setting you the challenge of drawing or painting hands. Hands can be one of the trickiest subjects to capture, but they are also incredibly expressive and full of character. Think about how much we use our hands every day – for creating, communicating, holding, working, caring, and expressing emotions. They tell stories all on their own.

For this challenge, take a little time to really study your own hands, or ask a family member or friend if you can sketch theirs. You could draw a single hand in a relaxed pose, two hands clasped together, or even hands holding an object such as a mug, pencil, or flower. If you prefer, keep things simple and focus on the shapes and outlines with line drawings or tonal sketches.

This is a wonderful exercise to practise observation, proportion, and form – all really useful skills for artists of every level. Do not worry if it feels tricky at first, the more you practise, the more confident you will become.

Tutor’s Tip: Try sketching your hand in different positions for a few minutes at a time – quick studies can sometimes capture the gesture and movement more naturally than spending too long on a single drawing.

We are really looking forward to seeing your drawings and paintings of hands. As always, email us your finished artwork to feature in the challenge gallery.

The idea of these challenges is to help students improve their skills by drawing, painting and creating regularly.
