Weekend Art Challenge Results – Harbour Life

This weekend we invited our students to head to the coast – at least in spirit – for a challenge themed around Harbour Life. The brief was simple: capture the essence of a harbour scene, whether it be bustling fishing boats, quiet moorings, dockside drama, or the odd pair of wellies left on the quay!

And what a catch! From gentle watercolour seascapes to colourful oil paintings and intricate line drawings, you have all managed to reel in the charm, grit, and beauty of harbour life. One entry beautifully captured the warm glow of a sunrise over a peaceful loch, with a lone boat bobbing gently in the water – pure serenity. Another took us on a trip through time with a traditional sailing ship riding a stylised sea straight from a historical map. We loved the dynamic pen sketch of a steamship being loaded at port full of energy and character. A few of you brought harbours to life with expressive, bold colour work from lively fishing villages to modern marinas. And then there’s the piece that quietly stole the show with a close-up of weathered yellow boots and a mooring rope. It’s always the details that tell the biggest stories.

This challenge truly celebrated the diversity of style and media across our student body. It was a joy to see harbours imagined through soft pencil marks, thick brush strokes, vibrant inks and peaceful pastels. Some pieces felt fresh and spontaneous, others wonderfully layered and thoughtful.

Thank you all for setting sail with us this weekend – you have captured everything from the romance of the open sea to the industrious life of working ports. Bravo!

Keep an eye out for the next weekend challenge… it’s going to be a ‘super‘ one.

‘Harbour Life’ It’s pen and wash but unpainted as yet – next job. Hmmm…painting might reduce the effect of some lines that are too thick – I think I picked up a pen thicker than the one I’d used for most of the drawing.
